Ocean Plastic Pollution

Certified Marine Litter Expert

eXXpedition Ambassador

After documenting microplastics in the Salish Sea on a research voyage with eXXpedition in 2018, I couldn’t put the ocean plastic pollution issue down. I wrote article after article, joined remote coastline clean-ups and eventually gained my Marine Litter Expert certification through the UN Environment Programme.

What draws me to this issue is that it spans so many of the environmental threats we are facing today, from ocean warming to loss of biodiversity, human health to socio-economic impacts. A complex web of industry action, government inaction and failed systems created this problem, which means there isn’t a single solution, but many. Getting people to engage in those solutions is what drives me.

I volunteer as the Communications Manager for Drop the Plastic, our efforts include coastline clean-ups, stakeholder engagement and education campaigns. Follow us to learn more about the issues.

Is your business or community group is interested in taking action against ocean plastic pollution?

I offer virtual and in-person workshops (when COVID restrictions allow) on ocean plastics for businesses, surf or wellness retreats, community groups and schools. I have an established Ocean Plastic Solutions workshop that I run but I can customize my offerings for a particular focus or audience.

  • Monitoring program creation

  • Solution strategy and problem management

  • Proposals to stakeholders

  • Public awareness campaigns

Speaking

You can hire me to speak at your event or business on the global ocean plastic pollution issue, or, specifically about how marine debris is impacting BC. I tailor my presentations for the audience and I will meet them where they are at on the issues.

I am also available for podcasts, or other interviews on the subject of ocean plastics and how it impacts our water sports, tourism, economy and health. The more people we have thinking about ocean plastic pollution, and the solutions, the better off we’ll be!
